This was initially going to be a list of the 5 shows I enjoyed most this year, but then when I looked through my day planner to refresh my memory, there were just too many good ones.
Sort of somewhat in order:
1. James Blake - September 25 at the Commodore Ballroom
I like James Blake, but it definitely occurred to me that this show had the potential to be boring. Instead, every aspect of it was near-perfect.
2. Sheezer - March 12 at the Rickshaw
I think they were opening for Born Ruffians, but we didn’t even stay. This was probably the most fun I have had at any show ever. We were just drunk enough, and we definitely sang along to every song, and Sheezer was just amazing.
3. Shonen Knife - November 7 at the Biltmore
They can make me smile like no other band. Plus, (local!) openers Keep Tidy are so great live. (And recorded).
4. Apollo Ghosts - September 17 at the Toast Collective
This was a shitty day, made better by this set.
5. …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - June 21 at the Electric Owl
Both times I have seen them live, I have been blown away. Nothing beats “How Near How Far”.
6. “Not a Cub Reunion” - Mint Records 20th Anniversary Party at the Waldorf
OK, it wasn’t all of Cub, but a singalong involving Lisa Marr’s grandmother was about as delightful as I could have hoped for.
7. Woolworm - Everywhere
This is lame, but I couldn’t pick just one show. So here’s to Woolworm for being the band that I saw the most times, in the most random venues (from parking lots and basements, to churches, to nightclubs), and that I always always enjoy seeing.
8. Gang Gang Dance - October 15 at the Biltmore
Freaky.
9. Forgetters - January 29 at Branx in Portland
We saw Blake Schwarzenbach, how could it not be memorable? Great show, and I’ve been enjoying the 7 inch that I got from it ever since.
10. Set Foot - September 1 at the Zoo Zhop
